Born and raised in Dundalk, Ireland, Tommy Byrne discovered his passion for racing at 18 years old after attending a driving school in his home country. What began as a simple introduction to performance driving quickly became a lifelong pursuit. His first racing experience came behind the wheel of a Formula Ford 1600, and from that moment Tommy was hooked. Inspired by the classic racing film “Grand Prix”, Byrne set his sights on building a career in motorsports.
After only a few years competing in grassroots racing in Ireland, Byrne earned a major opportunity when he was hired as a fully funded works driver for PRS Cars in England in 1979. Racing across Europe, he competed at some of the sport’s most iconic circuits, including Circuit de Spa-Francorchamps, Nürburgring, Hockenheimring, Circuit Zolder and the Red Bull Ring. One of his earliest major victories came at the Nürburgring in a PRS Formula Ford 1600, a milestone that helped launch his rise through the motorsports ranks.
Throughout his career, Byrne competed in an impressive range of series, including Formula One, Formula Ford 1600, Formula Ford 2000, Formula 3, Formula 3000, Indy Lights, Super Vee, Formula 3 Mexico and Formula 2 Mexico. He also raced in some of endurance racing’s most prestigious events, including the 24 Hours of Daytona and the 12 Hours of Sebring. Along the way, Byrne captured six major championships on his path to Formula One competition.
Beyond his accomplishments behind the wheel, Byrne is also an award-winning author and filmmaker. His autobiography, “Crash and Byrned”, earned widespread recognition, as did the acclaimed documentary “Crash and Burn”, which chronicles his remarkable and unconventional journey through professional motorsports.
Today, Byrne focuses primarily on driver coaching, while occasionally participating in endurance races alongside his clients. Since joining The Mid-Ohio School in 1994, he has become a beloved instructor and mentor. Introduced to the school through fellow racer and broadcaster Calvin Fish, Byrne quickly found a second home at Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course. He looks forward to returning each spring and considers the facility one of his favorite places in motorsports.
Among the programs he teaches, Byrne especially enjoys the three-day school experience. Watching students arrive eager to learn and leave with even greater enthusiasm and passion for driving are some of the most rewarding aspects of his role. For Byrne, there is no greater satisfaction than helping aspiring drivers build confidence, develop skills, and in some cases, begin racing careers of their own.
