Scott McKinley’s love for racing began long before he ever set foot on a racetrack. Growing up in the 1980s, he was captivated by fast cars and high-speed adventures on television, with shows like The Dukes of Hazzard, Knight Rider, and Starsky & Hutch fueling his imagination. Those early influences sparked a lifelong fascination with automobiles and performance, one that even his grandfather’s tractor on the family farm couldn’t escape during Scott’s earliest “driving” experiments.
His first true motorsports memory came in 1984, when he attended his first CART (now known as the INDYCAR SERIES) race weekend at Mid-Ohio with his father and a family friend from Lima, Ohio. That same weekend also included a trip to Mansfield Speedway to watch World of Outlaws and Pro Stock cars battle it out on dirt which was an unforgettable introduction to the wide world of racing. From that point on, motorsports wasn’t just an interest; it became part of who he was.
Inspired by heroes such as Mario Andretti, Bobby Rahal, Danny Sullivan, Dale Earnhardt, A.J. Foyt, and even the fictional Bo Duke, McKinley charted a unique and demanding path into professional racing not as a driver at first, but as a mechanic. In 1999, at age 26, he earned a hard-fought opportunity with a CART-sanctioned professional team, jumping straight into one of the most competitive environments in motorsports. With no traditional grassroots ladder behind him, it was truly a sink-or-swim moment.
In just two years, McKinley rose through the ranks to become a car and crew chief, working directly with his childhood hero Bobby Rahal and alongside future stars such as Danica Patrick, Ryan Hunter-Reay, and A.J. Allmendinger. His skills and work ethic led to invitations to work on special projects for new CART team entries and American Le Mans Series efforts, further cementing his reputation within the racing fraternity.
At the same time, McKinley continued pursuing his own driving ambitions. Whenever he wasn’t on the road turning wrenches, he was honing his skills in Barber Dodge Pro Series, guided by a group of legendary coaches who helped fast-track his development. While he knew he had missed the window to pursue a full-time professional driving career, another dream moment arrived when he was selected as a test driver for special projects in the Reynard 98E. At the time, it felt like winning the Indianapolis 500.
Though his professional driving opportunities were limited, McKinley remained deeply involved in racing through grassroots endurance competition, building cars and co-driving with close friends who became family. Over time, his experience naturally transitioned into instruction, allowing him to share knowledge earned through decades in the sport.
In 2016, lightning struck again when The Mid-Ohio School was searching for a fleet manager with extensive racing and automotive experience. For McKinley, it was a homecoming. Mid-Ohio had been a central part of his life since that first race weekend in 1984 as a fan, a competitor, and now a steward of the facility and its mission.
McKinley began instructing at The Mid-Ohio School in 2015, after being introduced by Tommy Byrne and Sonny Gee, the school’s director. Today, he continues to give back to the place that shaped him, racing in ChampCar and AER endurance series while mentoring the next generation of drivers.
Among all the programs he teaches, Teen Defensive Driving Programs hold a special place in his heart. Scott believes deeply in their life-saving impact, while also recognizing their power to inspire young drivers to take chances, chase dreams, and find their place in motorsports. Perhaps, he muses, one of those students will someday become part of The Mid-Ohio School family themselves.
For Scott McKinley, racing has always been more than speed. It’s been about perseverance, opportunity, and coming full circle at the track that started it all.
